Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is a diagnostic imaging study that is safe and non-invasive. These scans provide information about both the function and anatomy of our body. It involves the use of a small amount of radioisotope tracers, which are designed to target and image a specific area/organ of the body.

Nuclear Medicine can provide early detection of a range of health issues from a stress fracture to heart disease.

For most scans, a small amount of the radioisotope tracer is injected through a vein in your arm or hand. It may take seconds to several hours for the tracer to travel through the body and accumulate in the organ/area being investigated. Because of this, the images may be taken immediately or up to several hours afterwards.

Nuclear Medicine uses a special Camera to detect radiation inside the body called a “Gamma Camera”. The camera does not emit any radiation.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please notify the staff at the time of making the appointment as the study may need to be postponed.

Preparation for a Nuclear Medicine scan varies. Prior to your appointment you will be advised of the necessary preparation by the staff.
